A-Z: Aphrodite's Child - Aegian Sea

With its elaborate electronic textures, this 1972 track from Greek prog rock outfit Aphrodite's Child sounds very much ahead of its time, almost like some modern ambient piece. The band formed in 1967, and consisted of Vangelis Papathanassiou (keyboards), Demis Roussos (bass, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals), Loukas Sideras (drums and vocals), and Silver Koulouris (guitar).

After their first two albums, in 1970 the band began to record a musical adaptation of the Book of Revelation, entitled 666. But relations between the band members were at a low, and things continued to worsen during the lengthy recording of the double LP. Vangelis's ambitious concept didnt go down well with the other members of the group, who had began to splinter. Demis Roussos was starting a highly solo career, and Vangelis was working on soundtracks. By the time 666 was finally released almost two years later in June 1972, the band had already split up, having sold over 20 million albums.

Roussos' solo career as a pop singer was hugely successful. He died in 2015. Vangelis went on to become a highly regarded electronic music artist, working on several film soundtracks. Koulouris occasionally worked with both Roussos and Vangelis on occasion, while Sideras pursued a solo career.
