I only gained knowledge of The Juan MacLean's existence after the release of the fantastic 'Get Down With My Love' single from a while back, and it didn't take long before I started listening to a few of MacLean's previous albums, the 2009 effort 'The Future Will Come' a particularly fine piece of work. Back in the early 2000's, Maclean was guitarist in a post-hardcore band called Six Finger Satellite, who were eventually joined by sound engineer James Murphy. After the band's demise, Murphy founded the influential DFA Records and "urged MacLean to get back into music". I'm glad he did. Taken from the upcoming 'In A Dream', the spacey disco-pop groove of 'A Simple Design' greets us with delicious synth lines that get deep under the skin, and an impressively authoritative vocal from the brilliant Nancy Whang, who has now become a permanent member of what is now a duo. 'In A Dream' is out via DFA on September 16.
