REWIND: The Fall - Repetition

The maverick genius Mark E. Smith passed away earlier this year, leaving behind a lifetime of extraordinary, bewildering, uncompromising and intelligent music. The Fall were active from 1976 up until Smith's death, and released a total of 31 studio albums, along with an array of EPs, compilations and live LPs. Cherry Red Records have recently issued an excellent 3 CD compilation '58 Golden Greats', which is essentially a reissue of 2004's '50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong', updated with another disc which covers the final era of the group's output.

The compilation begins with a track which became one of The Fall's signature tunes, defining Smith's love of effective musical repetition. It was originally released on their debut EP 'Bingo-Master's Break-Out!', issued in August 1978 through record label Step-Forward. The three tracks on it make up the only studio recording by the original Fall line-up (Mark E. Smith, Martin Bramah, Tony Friel, Una Baines, and Karl Burns).
