SONG FOR TODAY: The Third Bardo - I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time

A song that I first heard of back in late 1997 when Primal Scream announced that they were to cover this underrated psychedelic classic. When hearing one of the band's gigs broadcast live on Radio 1 (the tape of which I still own now) the band gave their version of the track an airing and fantastic it was too. However the recorded version the Scream included on the B side of 'Accelerator' was nowhere near as good as their live version, or indeed as good as The Third Bardo's original...

"The Third Bardo were an American psychedelic rock band from New York led by singer Jeff Monn. The group existed for a brief time in the late 1960s. In 1967 they released their only single, 'I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time.' This song received some radio exposure, but only years later was recognized as a 1960s rock classic due to its inclusion in compilations such as the critically acclaimed 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968' Box Set. The Third Bardo only had one recording session, which yielded six tracks in all, and released one other song as a B-side, 'Rainbow Life.' The band broke up in 1967 and Monn began a solo career as Chris Moon."
