Today's SONG FOR TODAY comes from a group who have unexpectedly made one of the albums of the year. Dexy's Midnight Runners were a phenomenon in the 1980's, and following some massive hits (including two Number 1 singles) they released their third album 'Don't Stand Me Down' in 1985, when I was just 1 years old. By the time the follow-up was released I was a 27 year old man, about to turn 28. With the band's name shortened to simply Dexys, the superb 'One Day I'm Going To Soar' finally saw the light of day earlier this year, gaining ecstatic reviews and turning on a whole new generation of listeners on to the band's sound.
The album features, alongside Dexys main man Kevin Rowland, 1980s Dexys members "Big" Jim Paterson, Pete Williams and Mick Talbot, new recruits Neil Hubbard and Tim Cansfield, and guest vocalist Madeleine Hyland, who duets with Rowland on several songs. It's very hard to pick just one track from an album of such great quality, especially since all the songs seem to fit together as a complete and cohesive body of work. I think I'll have to choose the mysterious and extremely sassy genius of 'She Got A Wiggle'. If you haven't heard this wonderful and truly essential album then take a listen via the Spotify player further down this page...
