Those not familiar with the concept of the day should be aware that I do an A to Z series of great songs, one for every day, and for the last few weeks I have been running you through an A to Z of lost late 90's/early 00's indie classics, mostly from forgotten bands.
I've gone from A all the way to W, but couldn't find any lost indie classics from the late 90's/early 00's that were made by any artists beginning with Q, X,Y or Z. So to make up for that I'm including some extra tracks. This one is by Dark Star.
This group were apparently formed out of the ashes of a band called Levitation (fronted by ex House Of Love guitarist Terry Bickers) I first heard Dark Star back in 1998 when the Evening Session was regularly playing their single 'Gracedelica', and bought the single. Thanks to a DJ friend of mine I ended up with a promotional sampler of their 'TwentyTwenty Sound' album (produced by Steve Lillywhite), and on it was this track which was also to be a single. In 2000, remixes of these tracks gave the group two Top 40 singles. Dark Star began recording their new album but after a lack of interest at their label (EMI, no surprises there) they were dropped and split up in 2001 with no official announcement. After the group's demise, drummer David Francolini returned to Bristol where he runs a recording studio called Ohm, and was last seen playing with his new band Dragons, while the singer was last seen playing guitar for the Pet Shop Boys in their live band, and the other one is now a session musician. It's a shame so many bands have split up because their record company failed to promote them as much as they promote the cheap nasty pop stars..........
