Listen to my epic compilation 'The Sound Of 1998' by scrolling down the page and clicking on the Mixcloud players. For Spotify users there is an edited version of the compilation, along with a selection of extra tracks from 1998....
One night in 1998, and i had picked up the latest copy of the NME: "British music going up in flames" read the front page of an issue addressing the UK's hangover after the massive Britpop binge we had been enjoying. This was an exaggeration. But in many ways 1998 was the end of an era. Well part of an era anyway.
There was a notable shift towards a darker, and sometimes rather sombre sound, as the post-Britpop era had begun. This was the year i began religiously listening to The Evening Session, enabling a transformation from Britpop kid to Indie teenager. And although a lot of great new bands tipped for big things never really took off commercially, there was planty of great music to be found. Some wanted to attempt to rejuvenate Britpop, others decided to move on from it and not let it limit their musical horizons, and others went exploring new sounds.
But unlike 1997, 1998 only had a few classic albums to speak of, in the shape of Mansun's bewildering 'Six' (which sounded mental back in 1998, and now sounds insanely great) and the sorely underrated 'Kingsize' from the Boo Radleys, an album i regard as their finest and possibly the last great Britpop album. And while that particular album flopped commercially and broke the band up, at least the charts still had plenty of proper music to speak of, since the decline of the mainstream had only just slowly begun, and although a lot of singles and albums should have got higher, at least we still lived in an age where you would hear good new music on an average radio station, unlike the appalling state of affairs in 2010.
Anyway here it is, 1998: a year that is and has remained musically close to my heart
