A-Z: Adamski - N-R-G

A rave classic from early 90s dance pioneer Adamski. The blinding 'N-R-G' was the UK producer's debut single, reaching number 11 in the UK singles charts back in 1990.

Adamski (aka Adam Tinley) started playing music at a very young ages, and ended up in a band called Diskord Datkord. They released an electroid cover of ‘Identity’ by punk band X-Ray Spex. It was single of the week in NME in 1988, but was the group's only release. The following year, Adamski began playing his first solo shows and was noticed by Lenny D, promoter of nightclub Heaven, who booked him in for an all-day event. He became hot property, and after a bidding war, he signed to MCA Records. His first album was entitled 'Liveandirect', recorded live at various raves. During his set at Sunrise Festival, the then-unknown Seal gave a demo tape to Adamski's flatmate. Upon hearing Seal's voice, Adamski sent some instrumentals to Seal, who chose what turned out to be ‘Killer’. The track was a smash hit in the USA and in Europe, taking the number 1 spot in the UK singles charts in May 1990.

This decade has seen Adamski making music inspired by waltz: “After 30 years in the nightspots of the world providing sci-fi beats for hedonists, and even longer as a consumer of all the best scenes from glam rock to grime, I am now spurting all my creative juice into what I call Futurewaltz,” he says.“I realized just how sexy and groovy the Waltz rhythm can be. While googling its origins, I became fascinated and inspired by the history of the Waltz and its social and cultural significance.”

The 2015 album 'Revolt' featured guests ranging from Lee "Scratch" Perry, David McAlmont, annd Congo Natty, to Asia Argento, Bishi, Betty Adewole, and Rowdy SS. Tinley's latest alter ego is the "cyberbilly" Sonny Erikson, a "self-styled Teddy Boy Timelord armed with a laptop and a Gretsch guitar, swaggering down the information superhighway to source the most rockin' elements from 1955-2025. Fusing rockabilly and psychobilly styles with the hypnotic, strange and robotic sounds of today and beyond." The album The Sound of Sonny Eriksson was released in 2017, and was followed by the 2018 EP The Spirit of Sonny Eriksson'.
