REWIND: Suede - 'New Generation'

God Is In The TV's Britpop Month is running throughout February and this month's 'REWIND' selection will also make up GIITTV's daily Great Britpop Songs. Read more articles from Britpop Month HERE.

Although I first discovered this lot in 1993 when they set the Brit Awards of that year alight, it wasn't until 1995 that I finally bought one of their records. Well, a cassette tape to be precise. And it was this tremendous, headrush of a single that provided the lead track. After many years of missed chances and lost hope, I finally saw Suede live last year in 2013, at a magnificent gig they played at the Bristol Academy. You can read a review of that HERE. Fittingly, the glorious 'New Generation' was the final song of the night. I'm glad that I decided to film that performance (in which Brett strikes a great Top Of The Pops-esque pose), which can be seen beneath the original 'New Generation' video below.

Written by Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler (who had left the group by that point), 'New Generation' was the third and final single from the album 'Dog Man Star', and was released on January 30 1995, reaching Number 21 in the UK Singles Charts. It is the first single to feature music by new guitarist Richard Oakes, who made his debut on the B sides 'Together' and 'Bentswood Boys'.
