By 2002 the UK charts had become saturated with manufactured novelty acts, poor US soft rock acts and appalling rappers.
But there was still room in the charts for some real music, in a year that brought highly anticipated albums from Oasis, Primal Scream, Coldplay, as well as being a breakthrough year for Doves, Idlewild and A. And of course this was the year that brought us debut albums from The Music, The Coral, Hundred Reasons, The Cooper Temple Clause, Haven and The Libertines.
In terms of actual albums being entirely consistant, 2002 probably wasn't the best year: A good example of this is Oasis's 'Heathen Chemistry' which was very patchy and certainly had a lot of filler, but amongst it were a few good tracks. Same with most of the other albums of the year, some duff tracks but when the songs were good they'd be VERY good indeed. But when you take all the best tracks off of those albums and compile them into a 'Best Of 2002', you end up with A LOT of tracks, not to mention a great compilation. So here it 2002: it's not as bad as it seemed at the time, if you take out the unnecessary bits.
