More wonderful music from 1996 as RW/FF takes you aboard a musical TARDIS on a journey through musical history. If you weren't around or were too young to remember the mid 90s, it's a lesson of enlightenment. If you (like me) were lucky enough to experience it all first time around, then these posts make a fine nostalgic blast from the blast.
Today we rewind exactly 20 years to the Top 40 from the week of October 5th 1996, which featured a few rather fine new entries. One of which was Sleeper's 'Statuesque', written by the band's vocalist and guitarist (and Britpop sex symbol) Louise Wener. Featured in the legendary 1996 film Trainspotting, the single peaked at number seventeen on the UK Singles Chart, and was taken from their second album 'The It Girl'. It was their most successful album, reaching number 5, and selling over 300,000 copies in England alone, earning them a Platinum disc. A few years ago in 2010, the album was re-released as a 2CD edition, featuring all the b sides from that era and other extra tracks.
Formed in 1993, the band had eight UK Top 40 hit singles and three UK Top 10 albums before splitting in 1998. Louise Wener is now a successful novelist, and probably won't be in a hurry to reform the group any time soon...
