Track Of The Day: Graham Coxon - 'What'll It Take'

The video to Blur guitarist (and now solo legend in his own right) Graham Coxon's blinding new single 'What'll It Take' is made up of featured moves sent in by 85 fans from 22 countries, and all cut together by director Ninian Doff

This fine track can be found on Graham Coxon's new solo album 'A+E. Graham recorded 21 songs during the album's two-month-long recording process with producer Ben Hillier. The 11 songs that did not make it onto A+E were divided into a separate album that could possibly be released in late 2012. Or so we're told anyway....

Damon Albarn, Flea's Rocketjuice And The Moon unveil first single 'Hey Shooter'

Rocketjuice And The Moon, the new project featuring Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen, have unveiled their first single 'Hey Shooter'. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to listen to the track. 

The track features Erykah Badu and is the first to be revealed from the band's self-titled debut album, which is due for release on March 26. 

The Blur and Gorillaz man began working on the self-titled LP with the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist and The Good, The Bad & The Queen drummer in 2008 when they met on a flight to Lagos, Nigeria. 

The album, which was recorded in Albarn's Studio 13 in London, also features contributions from Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, Ghanian rapper M. anifest and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

The record contains a total of 18 tracks, with 'Hey Shooter' the second tune on the album. 

Rocketjuice And The Moon made their live debut with a show at the Barbican in London in October last year.

Watch Radiohead debut new tracks 'Identikit' and 'Cut A Hole' - video

Photo: Photo: Danny North/NMERadiohead debuted two new songs during the first show of their 2012 world tour in Miami last night (February 27). 

The band, who will be touring throughout 2012 in support of their new album 'The King Of Limbs', kicked off the tour at Miami's American Airlines arena and played new tracks 'Identikit' and 'Cut A Hole' as part of their set. You can see live footage of both tracks by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.

The tracks were part of a 24-song setlist that drew heavily from 'The King Of Limbs'. It also featured the little aired 'Meeting In The Aisle' from the band's 'I Might Be Wrong EP', reports Consequence Of Sound.

The band have also booked assorted European shows and festival appearances throughout the summer, including slots at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Fuji Rock Festival and Bilbao BBK Live festival. 

The band are expected to confirm UK dates in the coming weeks, but are yet to say when this will be. Guitarist Ed O'Brien has previously hinted that the band will play arena shows in the UK rather than festival dates.

Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine?

Arctic Monkeys have debuted their brand new single 'R U Mine?' online, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to hear the track. 

The track, which does not feature on the band's 2011 fourth album 'Suck It And See', was posted online in the early hours of this morning (February 27). It will be released as a single on March 2. 

The band had previously said that they were planning to release "a new tune" before they undertake a lengthy stint across the USA and Canada as support to The Black Keys on their US arena tour.

The Sheffield band have also released a video for 'R U Mine?', which features them driving through the streets while the track is given its radio debut on California station KROQ.

Sennen- Vultures

Sennen's new single, Vultures, will be released through Indelabel on March 5th. It is taken from their forthcoming third album, called Lost Harmony, which will be released in the spring of 2012. Sennen will be playing London's Barfly on March 8th, 2012, with a UK and European tour planned for May of the same year.
The video for Vultures was directed by Broken Pixel AKA Ashley Dean, who was formerly in iLiKETRAiNS. 

Formed in 2002, Sennen are Larry Holmes (vocals, guitar, keys); Rich Kelleway (vocals, guitar); James Brown (drums, keys) and Tim Kelleway (bass). The band's first two albums - Where The Light Gets In and Age of Denial - were released on Hungry Audio in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Whilst working on Lost Harmony, the band recruited the help of producer David M Allen, who has worked with The Cure; The Human League and Depeche Mode.

Public Image Ltd can confirm that a 4 track ‘EP’ entitled ‘One Drop’ is set to be released for ‘Record Store Day’ onApril 21st, marking their first new material for 20 years. The 4 track ‘EP’ is taken from the forthcoming album ‘This Is PiL’ released on May 28th. (EP track listing revealed below)

Both the new EP and album is self-funded by PiL and will be released on PiL’s own label ‘PiL Official’ via Cargo UK Distribution. All the new material was recorded in the UK last year at Steve Winwood’s studio in the Cotswolds.

PiL were recently confirmed as special guests at BBC Radio 6 birthday celebrations at Queen Elizabeth Hall, LondonMarch 16th where they will be performing live, including some new tracks. With their show at The Brighton Concorde on August 16th sold out, a second date has been added at the venue on August 15th.

Lead track ‘One Drop’ from the EP of the same name was given an exclusive airing by Steve Lamacq on his BBC 6 show last week. John Lydon describes the track as-

“One Drop is a reflection of where I grew up in Finsbury Park, London. The area that shaped me, and influenced me culturally and musically, a place I will forever feel connected to. But within this I am also saying it doesn’t matter where you come from, we all go through the same emotions especially the disenchanted youth of today, yesterday and the future. Bearing in mind the Olympics are in London this year and who knows what that could bring for London and our country….”

Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time PiL's music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. John Lydon- After fronting the Sex Pistols, John Lydon formed Public Image Ltd in 1978.  Outside of PiL John has released several solo records and collaborations. He also brings quality TV to the masses.

Lu Edmonds- Multi instrumentalist and former guitarist in The Damned Lu joined PiL in 1986 recording and playing on the album Happy? and co-writing the album ‘9’ adding yet another dimension to the PiL sound.

Bruce Smith- Former drummer in The Pop Group and The Slits became percussionist for PiL also in 1986 playing and recording on the albums Happy? and ‘9’. Seen as a drumming virtuoso, Bruce Smith brought his unique style into the fold.

Scott Firth- A bass player/multi instrumentalist that has collaborated and played with a variety of top musicians and bands including Steve Winwood, John Martyn, and Elvis Costello.

Track Of the Day: Gorillaz - 'DoYaThing' (Extended)

An extended version of Gorillaz's new single 'DoYaThing' has surfaced online.

The 13 minute version of the track, which also features Outkast's Andre 3000 and former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, can be heard by scrolling down and clicking below.

The collaborative song is part of a number of recordings for Converse's 'Three Artists. One Song' campaign. which has previously brought together rapper Soulja Boy, Andrew WK and Matt And Kim to record a collaboration, and also saw Graham Coxon, Paloma Faith and ex-Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones collaborate to record a track together in 2010.

Singer Damon Albarn, recently commented that a 13-minute unedited version of the track would also be released in the future.

John Peel's record collection to be made into online museum

John Peel's record collection to be made into online museumJohn Peel's record collection is to be made into an interactive online museum. 

Peel's collection, which contains 25,000 LPs, 40,000 singles and many thousands of CDs, will become part of The Space, a new experimental digital service organised and funded by the Arts Council and the BBC. 

The Arts Council will provide initial funding while the BBC will provide support and development advice. Further funding will be sought in the future to complete the project and make every record available online. 

Tom Barker, Director, John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, said: "It is the first step in creating an interactive online museum with access to the entire collection, one of the most important archives in modern music history."

Frank Prendergast of Eye Film And Television added: "The idea is to digitally recreate John’s home studio and record collection, which users will be able to interact with and contribute to, while viewing Peel’s personal notes, archive performances and new filmed interviews with musicians."

Sheila Ravenscroft, John Peel's wife and Patron of the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts also commented, stating: "We’re very happy that we’ve finally found a way to make John’s amazing collection available to his fans, as he would have wanted. This project is only the beginning of something very exciting."

The Space will run from May to October across various platforms including PCs and smartphones, while it will also be available as a red button on-demand service via Freeview HD. 

Arts Council England is committing up to £3.5m, while the BBC is contributing to the partnership by developing the technological solutions and providing ongoing support.

REVIEW: Tribes - Baby

The debut album from Tribes is a pretty impressive collection of songs that blend their shiny tuneful influences with a tougher, raw element that provides a gritty edge to the sunny melodies. The opening 'Whatever' is an undoubted highlight, packing many addictive thrills and suggesting that Tribes may share some musical DNA with 90s Brit heroes the Longpigs as well as bearing shades of the Pixies. The group may be influenced my American grunge but they have clearly learned from a wide variety of British artists as well. This is evident on the glam nostalgia of 'We Were Children' with its air punching chorus declaring how they "were children in the mid 90s" immediately reviving memories of the glorious Britpop years, and also recalling the sweaty glamour of early Suede. 

But it doesn't stop at the 90s, as the charmingly introspective 'Corner Of An English Field' displays how Tribes have also learned from the guitar bands of the 2000s, with a bridge that is pure Killers and vocals that come across like a grittier Razorlight.  Meanwhile on 'Half Way Home' a simple spot of guitar picking sets up the foundation for a great verse which soon gives way to a blissful lyricless chorus that builds into a Pulp-esque burst of confident indie pop brilliance. The American influences are most evident on 'Sappho', a stab at grunge pop which despite its fat muddy riff disappointingly ends up sounding like Razorlight covering the Fountains Of Wayne. 'Himalaya' is a welcome change in nature and tempo, a slow moving and slow burning album highlight with a verse recalling Arctic Monkeys at their most tender and a mighty burst of a chorus that brings to mind the Flaming Lips. 

'Nightdiving' has some lovely chiming guitars, raw emotion in the vocals and a most promising verse but it's soon marred by a chorus that lacks any real impact. Meanwhile 'When My Day Comes' is Libertines-esque rock n roll, perhaps not the most original set of musical ideas but great fun which also brings a great chorus and 'Walking In The Street' has shades of New Order, The Cure, the Smashing Pumpkins and again, the Pixies but the quality of the song pales in comparison to its influences. 'Alone Or With My Friends' is a bit like what would have happened if Blur's 'Tender' was written by Embrace instead while the closing highlight 'Bad Apple' is probably the most Britpop influenced moment here, coming across a little bit like 'Dear Prudence' being rewritten by Pulp or perhaps the Longpigs. 

Tribes can produce some catchy and impressive moments, but their sound is ultimately a mixture of many other bands and as a result 'Baby' is hardly the most original record you're going to hear this year. However if you like singalong choruses, loud guitars and catchy indie tunes then this album may well be worth purchasing. 7.5
