MUSIC MEMORABILIA #3: Foo Fighters analogue tape piece

Random Musical Item Of The Day : 07/01/2012

Heroically in an age of digital music, the Foo Fighters opted to record their most recent album in Dave Grohl's garage, and if that wasn't old-school enough, the album was recorded onto analogue tape. So imagine my joy when upon purchasing a copy of the excellent 'Wasting Light' I discovered an actual piece of this tape! Apparently the first editions of the album all came with a unique piece of tape, a nice gesture from the band that allows the fans to possess their very own piece of the album!

I wonder which bit I own? The ear-splitting Grohl scream towards the end of 'White Limo'? That final, glorious chorus of 'Walk'? Or maybe  that awesome intro to 'Rope'? I guess I'll never know...

From LA Weekly:

There are some aspects of modern music of which Dave Grohl isn't a fan — like licensing your catalogue to Glee — and that's why the Foo Fighters recorded their new album, Wasting Light, on analog tape instead of going digital. "When I listen to music these days, and I hear Pro Tools and drums that sound like a machine, it kinda sucks the life out of music," Grohl told LA Weekly. In fact, the band is including bits of that original master tape enclosed with each CD. "I thought, let's chop it up into a million pieces, and give it to the people who buy the album so they can hold it in their hands and see it," said Grohl. "A lot of the records you buy, there's nothing you can hold in your hand, it's all 1's and 0's, this digital cloud floating in the ether, but with analog albums, you can hold it in your hand." Just in case, though, there is one digital backup of that original file, but Grohl admits that he only made it because they'd need it later for games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
