THE 2010 PUNK EDITION

Along with my Essential 100 compilation, there were a lot of tracks that wouldve sounded out of place on an mostly indie/alternative collection, so i created the 2010 Punk Edition. Highlights of the year included Frenzy's awesome 'In The Blood' album, Gogol Bordello's 'Trans Continental Hustle' (along with their absolutely mental performance on Later with Jools Holland) and the return of Rancid side project Devil's Brigade, who bought us an unexpected album of rough, tough psychobilly street punk. COMPILATIONS: The Essential 100: 2010

'The Essential 100: 2010' is a 100 track, 6 CD compilation of 2010's best tracks.

In the months leading up to the end of the year i began re-creating some of my old yearly 'Best Of's from previous years, and found that rather than the two 90 minute cassettes that each year used to produce, I'd instead end up updating them to include other tracks, leading to sometimes 5 CD compliations. After completing the newly updated edition of my 2002 compilation CD set, i realised it ran to almost 100 tracks, all of great quality and it made me wonder just how many truly great tracks would end up making up 2010's compilation. And after weeks of revisiting the best albums and releases of 2010, i had 'narrowed down' a 'shortlist' of over 200 tracks, even after a lot of strict judgement. So bearing in mind that I've heard more new music in 2010 than any other previous year i decided upon changing my yearly best of format to a 'Top 100' compilation. The 6 CD set (the last disc has the 4 or so tracks that wouldn't fit across the first 5 discs) comes in a nice cardboard slipcase and each disc in its own nicely designed card sleeve. The running order of the compilation is not a countdown, chart or ordered list of the top 100, I just put the songs where they sounded best across the 6 CDs. In addition to the box set, i've also got about 6 discs of the stuff that wouldn't fit into the top 100, which themselves are also great. AND a double CD entitled 'Essential 2010: Punk Edition' of the year's best punk, psychobilly and ska.

I'll post that soon along with my list of top 10 albums of the year, in the meantime here is the truly epic Essential 100: 2010

COMPILATIONS: 2002 The Album

By 2002 the UK charts had become saturated with manufactured novelty acts, poor US soft rock acts and appalling rappers.

But there was still room in the charts for some real music, in a year that brought highly anticipated albums from Oasis, Primal Scream, Coldplay, as well as being a breakthrough year for Doves, Idlewild and A. And of course this was the year that brought us debut albums from The Music, The Coral, Hundred Reasons, The Cooper Temple Clause, Haven and The Libertines.

In terms of actual albums being entirely consistant, 2002 probably wasn't the best year: A good example of this is Oasis's 'Heathen Chemistry' which was very patchy and certainly had a lot of filler, but amongst it were a few good tracks. Same with most of the other albums of the year, some duff tracks but when the songs were good they'd be VERY good indeed. But when you take all the best tracks off of those albums and compile them into a 'Best Of 2002', you end up with A LOT of tracks, not to mention a great compilation. So here it 2002: it's not as bad as it seemed at the time, if you take out the unnecessary bits.

REVIEW: Goldheart Assembly - 'Wolves And Thieves' (Fierce Panda Records)

A strong debut from a fine new band. At the moment every hyped new act usually fall into the electro-alternative or the indie-folk category, and when Goldheart Assembly find theirselves in the latter, they always find a way of taking the song somewhere more exciting, unlike many of their counterparts. Opener 'King Of Rome' (already one of the highlights of 2010) is a hauntingly addictive, opening track full of wonderful harmonies and a fine way to open an impressive album. Elsewhere we get fragile yet uplifting melodies on the powerful lullaby 'Anvil', and the melancholic sigh of 'Last Decade'. Hypnotic traces of folk appear in the darkly infectious 'Hope Hung High' where Beatles-esque harmonies are spread across thunderous 60's pop on the album's most biting moment, and elsewhere other highlights include the excellent 'A Reminder' and the sparkle of the sweet melancholic 'Under The Water', a blissful moment. Meanwhile, the single 'So Long St. Christopher' is a definite grower and a song Pete Doherty would kill to have written. The final two tracks arrive in the form of the epic 'Carnival 4 (The Carrying Song)' and the beautiful haze of 'Boulevards'. Heartfelt, melodic and accomplished, 'Wolves And Thieves' is without a doubt one of 2010's best debuts. 8.2/10

REVIEW: Streetlight Manifesto - '99 Songs of a Revolution Vol 1'

An album of sometimes eclectic covers from ska-punk outfit Streetlight Manifesto. The band's previous albums always featured a couple of amazing tracks but tended to drift off into monotony, and this covers album is no different. Their main problem is a reckless overuse of the brass section, which would be great as an occasional accompaniment to their sound, but is it really necessary when trying to recreate the guitar solo from Radiohead's 'Just' (this track alone lets this album down), or when plastered all over every single track without much imagination applied? However the record has its good points: opener 'Birds Flying Away' is impressive, 'Hell' and 'They Provide The Paint' is where the band's sound truly has an impact, and NOFX's 'Linoleum' is transformed into the sort of lazy day ska that Sublime would've been proud of. 5 or 6 great tracks out of 11... probably would've been better and far more effective as an EP..... 5.9/10

Track Of The Day: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - 'Conscience Killer'

The latest BRMC album 'Beat The Devil's Tattoo' is the sound of dirty, fierce and hypnotic rock 'n roll music in 2010... If you're looking for a record with BALLS then this is it! Heavy distortion, folk melodies, sleazy blues, shoegazing, and a bag full of awesome tunes ... it's all here.
